Fashion plate, from La Mode Illustreé

This hand-coloured fashion plate is from La Mode Illustreé, a fashion magazine published in Paris. The plate dates from 1870 and illustrates three evening dresses. It is signed, 'Bonnard' and 'Anaïs Toudouze'.

The girl on the right is standing with her back to the viewer, giving a good picture of the rear of the dress. The skirts are becoming slightly less voluminous than they had been in the previous decade and are moving towards the swept-back look of the bustle.

Adèle Anaïs Toudouze was one of the most prolific and popular fashion plate artists of the mid-nineteenth century. Examples of her work could be seen in many of the in the top fashion magazines of the time, including Le Follet and Le Magasin des Desmoiselles.
