This hand-coloured fashion plate is from La Mode Illustreé, a fashion magazine published in Paris. The plate illustrates a day dress and an evening dress and dates from 1865. It is signed, 'Gervais'.
The evening dress is shown with an ermine mantle. The day dress has a matching jacket and bonnet.
La Mode Illustreé first appeared in 1860 and was one of the most important fashion magazines of the second half of the nineteenth century. It was also one of the first magazines to include articles on underwear.
