Fashion plate, from La Mode Illustreé

This hand-coloured fashion plate is from La Mode Illustreé, a fashion magazine published in Paris. The plate illustrates three examples of 'Travestissements'- fancy dress costumes. It dates from 1864 and is signed, 'Gervais'.

The figure on the left is dressed in an historical costume. The little girl wears a German peasant outfit.

Juvenile fancy balls were much in fashion at this time and some of the best dresses were suggested by illustrated books and fairy tales. Other costumes for girls included, Bo-peep, Cinderella, Ladybird, Red Riding-Hood, Tambourine Girl and Titania.
