Fashion plate, from La Mode Illustreé

This hand-coloured fashion plate is from La Mode Illustreé, a fashion magazine published in Paris. The plate dates from 1862 and illustrates three day dresses, including one for a young girl. It is signed, 'Anaïs Toudouze'.

The seated woman wears a dress, mantle and bonnet all trimmed with white fur. As she is not wearing any kind of hat, we can assume the young lady on the right is not married, as only single girls were allowed to go bare-headed.

La Mode Illustreé first appeared in 1860 and was one of the most important fashion magazines of the second half of the nineteenth century. It was published every Sunday and had a circulation of approximately 20,000.
