Fashion plate, from La Mode Illustreé

This hand-coloured fashion plate is from La Mode Illustreé, a fashion magazine published in Paris. The plate dates from 1861 and is entitled, 'Album de la Mode Illustreé'. It illustrates four bonnets and one hat.

The bonnets are trimmed with flowers and lace and tied underneath the chin with large bows. The hat, in the centre, is trimmed with lace and an ostrich feather.

La Mode Illustreé first appeared in 1860 and was one of the most important fashion magazines of the second half of the nineteenth century. It was published every Sunday and had a circulation of approximately 20,000.
