Fashion plate, from Sylvia's Home Journal

This hand-coloured fashion plate is from Sylvia's Home Journal, a magazine published in London. The plate illustrates two evening dresses and is headed, 'Supplement to Sylvia's Home Journal November 1889'.

Both women are holding large fans. The plate is signed, '...Sylvain' and 'A. Chaillot'.

Fans remained popular throughout the late Victorian period. They could be concealed in the ample skirts, so there was no need for a handbag. The 1890s saw trends for ostrich-feather fans, black lace fans and hand-painted gauze fans.
