Fashion plate, from Bow-Bells

This hand-coloured fashion plate is from Bow-Bells, a fashion magazine published in London. Headed 'The Paris Fashions', the plate illustrates two ladies in day dresses and was presented with Part 9 in May 1865 and published with issue no 40 at the price of one penny.

The outfits reflect the fashions of the time. By 1865, dress skirts were huge, with backs lengthening to a train. Bodices were tight fitting. Hats had narrow brims trimmed with flowers and hair was swept back.

Bow-Bells was in publication for 32 years, from 1865 to 1897.
