Add to album

This hand-coloured fashion plate is from The Englishwoman's Domestic Magazine, a ladies' magazine published in London from 1852 until 1877. The plate illustrates two women in day dresses and is dated September, 1865.

The women are standing close to a beach hut. The woman on the left is wearing a mantle and a hat with a veil. The plate is signed, 'Jules David' and 'RĂ©ville'.

Jules David was born in 1808 and became a painter, lithographer and well known book illustrator. His fashion plates included elaborate backgrounds and interiors and were much admired. He continued to produce plates up until his death in 1892.
