This hand-coloured fashion plate is from The Englishwoman's Domestic Magazine, a ladies' magazine published in London. The plate illustrates two women and a young girl in outdoor day dresses. It is dated June, 1865 and signed, 'Jules David' and 'A. Bodin'.
The dresses reflect the fashion for enormous skirts which were popular from 1860-70. The hooped cage or artificial crinoline had been introduced in the 1850s to support and puff out the skirt. Bodices were tight fitting.
The Englishwoman's Domestic Magazine was founded in 1852 by Samuel Beeton, husband of the famous Mrs Isabella Beeton who wrote the cookery book. It was in this publication that Isabella's recipes first appeared.
