Fashion plate, from Corriere delle Dame

This hand-coloured fashion plate is from the Italian fashion magazine, Corriere delle Dame, published in Milan. The plate illustrates two women in day dresses and is dated 30 August, 1860. It is from a series entitled, 'Moda di Parigi' and is signed, 'Gandini'.

The outfits reflect the fashion of the time. During the period 1860-70, dress skirts were enormous and were supported by the hooped cage or artificial crinoline. Bodices were tight fitting.

The artificial crinoline was introduced in 1856. It allowed women to discard the numerous starched or horsehair petticoats and gave them a sense of freedom. However, it did have a tendency to tilt up and reveal the ankles which had long been concealed.
