Fashion plate, from Corriere delle Dame

This hand-coloured fashion plate is from the Italian fashion magazine, Corriere delle Dame, published in Milan. The plate illustrates two women in day dresses and bonnets and is dated 18 June, 1844.

The woman on the right is wearing a mantle - a loose, sleeveless cloak or cape. The seated woman is carrying a parasol.

Sometimes parasols were made with a joint in the middle, so that the holder could be shielded from the sun at any angle. Small versions were also attached to carriages for use when driving.
