Fashion plate, from Corriere delle Dame

This hand-coloured fashion plate is from the Italian fashion magazine, Corriere delle Dame, published in Milan. The plate illustrates two women in day dresses and bonnets and dates from 30 September, 1838. The plate series is entitled, 'Moda di Parigi'.

Both women are wearing large-brimmed bonnets, known as 'poke' bonnets. They are trimmed with lace, feathers and ribbons and completely surround the face.

In this period the emphasis was on roundness of contour. The dresses and bonnets were cut in such a way as to accentuate this roundness. In the hairstyles, the plaits and curls (which were often false), were arranged to compliment the oval shape of the face.
