Fashion plate, from Corriere delle Dame
Add to album

This hand-coloured fashion plate is from the Italian fashion magazine, Corriere delle Dame, published in Milan. The plate features two women in day dresses and is dated 30 December, 1836.

One women is seated at a window in order that the back of her fur-trimmed dress can be seen. The standing woman carries a muff - a cylindrical covering of fur into which the hands are placed for warmth.

In this period the emphasis was on roundness of contour. The dresses and bonnets were cut in such a way as to accentuate this roundness. In the hairstyles, the plaits and curls (which were often false), were arranged to compliment the oval shape of the face.
