Fashion plate, from Le Petit Courrier des Dames

This hand-coloured fashion plate is from Le Petit Courrier des Dames, a weekly fashion magazine published in Paris. The plate is one in a series entitled, 'Modes de Paris' and illustrates day dresses. It is dated 18 August, 1860.

The dress skirts are enormous and would have been supported by the artificial crinoline or hooped cage which had been introduced early in 1856. The plate is signed, 'Pauquet' and 'A. Portier".

A Pauquet also produced drawings for Le Journal des Demoiselles and The Queen. Other artists who contributed to Le Petit Courrier de Dames were A de Taverne, Laure Noël, Hervy and Madame de Closmenil.
