Fashion plate, from Le Petit Courrier des DamesThis hand-coloured fashion plate is from Le Petit Courrier des Dames, a weekly fashion magazine published in Paris. The plate is one in a series entitled, 'Modes de Paris' and illustrates two day dresses. It is dated, 12 April, 1856. The dress skirts are very full and would have been supported either by stiffened petticoats of crinoline (horsehair) or by the artificial crinoline or hooped cage which had been introduced early in 1856. The plate is signed, 'A.M.....' and 'Hopwood et Préval'. E Préval was one of the most prolific fashion plate artists of the 1860s. Others who contributed to Le Petit Courrier de Dames were A Paquet, A de Taverne, Laure Noël and Hervy. Record detailsTo search on related items, click any linked text below.
