Fashion plate, from Le Petit Courrier des Dames

This hand-coloured fashion plate is from Le Petit Courrier des Dames, a weekly fashion magazine published in Paris. The plate is one in a series entitled, 'Modes de Paris' and illustrates men's wear. Signed, 'Damours', it is dated 31 December, 1836.

The man on the left is wearing a frock coat lined with Canadian bison fur. His companion is wearing a gold silk brocade waistcoat.

Many of the plates issued by Le Petit Courrier des Dames were for male fashion. In the 19th century, young men who followed fashion and indulged themselves in more outrageous clothes were known as 'dandies' or 'swells'.
