Fashion plate, from Le Petit Courrier des Dames
Add to album

This hand-coloured fashion plate is from Le Petit Courrier des Dames, a weekly fashion magazine published in Paris. Dated 20 January, 1836, the plate is one of a series entitled, 'Modes de Paris' and illustrates two examples of 'Travestissements'- fancy dress costumes.

The lady on the left is wearing a costume with an historical theme. Her outfit is from the Middle Ages. She is carrying a mask in her right hand.

The 19th century fashion magazine contained many suggestions for fancy dress. The fancy dress ball was one of the occasions when women could be outwardly frivolous. Originating about the time of Waterloo, they were extremely popular.
