Fashion plate, from Le Petit Courrier des Dames
Add to album

This hand-coloured fashion plate is from Le Petit Courrier des Dames, a weekly magazine published in Paris. The plate is one of a series entitled, 'Modes de Paris' and illustrates menswear. Dated 30 April, 1834 it was engraved by Damours.

The men are in 'Modes de Long-champs' - outfits for the racecourse at Longchamps in Paris. The outfits include modern style trousers which became popular after about 1815.

Longchamps and Auteuil are racecourses in the Bois de Boulogne - a 2,140 acre park planned along English lines by Napoleon and situated on the western edge of Paris. The racecourse lawns were ideal settings for displaying the latest fashions.
