Fashion plate, from Le Petit Courrier des Dames

This hand-coloured fashion plate is from Le Petit Courrier des Dames, a weekly fashion magazine published in Paris. The plate is one of a series entitled, 'Modes de Paris' and illustrates a day dress. It is dated 1823 and signed, 'Barrau'.

By placing the two figures in a seated and standing position, the front and back of the dress can be appreciated. The waist has reverted back to its natural position and is tightly laced above a full length bell-shaped skirt. The skirt is heavily ornamented from the hem to knee level.

Le Petit Courrier des Dames was one of the most important of the 19th century French fashion magazines. In 1821, for its first year of publication, it was known as the Nouveau Journal des Dames. It continued in publication until around 1865.
