Add to album

This is the obverse of a billon 12 penny groat minted at Edinburgh in 1558, in the reign of Mary, Queen of Scots, during her marriage to Francis, the French dauphin.

The obverse bears a crowned 'FM' monogram, with a crowned dolphin to the right and a crowned thistle to the left. The Latin inscription translates as: 'Francis and Mary, by the Grace of God, King and Queen of Scots and Dauphin and Dauphine of Vien'.

The dolphin was the heraldic emblem of the dauphin.
