Add to album

This one pound banknote is of the Greenock Bank Company. It is a proof only and was never circulated. The spaces for the date, number and cashier's signature have been left blank.

The image at the top of the note depicts Greenock Custom House with an early steamship in the foreground. The inscription at the foot of the note reads, 'Designed & Engraved on Steel by Joseph Swan, Glasgow'.

The Greenock Bank Company was founded in Greenock in 1785. At the time of its amalgamation with the Western Bank of Scotland in November 1843, it was the last private bank existing in Scotland.
