This is the obverse of a copper proof halfpenny trade token of Dundee in Angus. Dated 1797, the token was designed by James Wright Junior and manufactured by Kempson. The die-sinker was Wyon.

The obverse depicts Dudhope Castle, founded in 1660 and converted into barracks in 1794.

One ton of tokens with a view of Dudhope Castle were struck. Between 1787 and 1817 over 10,000 different types of trade token were issued. Although some pennies were produced, the tokens were issued mainly in farthing or halfpenny denominations.
