Trade token (obverse), Penny, of Loch Leven, Kinross-shire

This is the obverse of a 1797 copper penny trade token of Loch Leven in Kinross-shire. Manufactured by Kempson, with dies sunk by Wyon, the token was for sale to collectors.

The obverse depicts a ruined castle with the surrounding text, 'LOCH LEVEN PENNY 1797/Q. MARY IMPRISONED IN THE ISLE AND CASTLE. A.D. 1567.'

In 1567 Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned in the castle after her surrender at Carberry Hill and was forced to abdicate. After nearly a year of imprisonment, Mary escaped from the castle with the help of William Douglas, keeper of the castle's boats.
