Fragment of a wooden plate
Add to album

This fragment of an ash plate is from Threave Castle in Kirkcudbrightshire. The plate was made locally and dates from the 14th or 15th century.

There are clear lathe marks on the underside of the rim.

Threave Castle was built in the late 14th century on a small island in the River Dee. It was a stronghold of the Black Douglases, one of Scotland's most powerful medieval families.
