Hilt guard
Add to album

This bronze hilt guard for a sword was found at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. It is of a native, rather than Roman, style, and fitted on a sword belonging to a member of the auxiliary cavalry.

The hilt guard is well preserved.

There were two classes of Roman soldiers: the elite legionary and the ordinary auxiliary soldier, each with its own particular type of equipment. Some of the auxiliaries were recruited locally, and used native weapons or equipment.
