Bookbinding

This bookbinding of embossed morocco leather was produced for 'Italian Book Illustrations chiefly of the Fifteenth Century' by Dante Gabriel Rossetti. The cover was made by Phoebe Traquair in 1897.

In 1920, Phoebe Anna Traquair (1852-1936) became the first woman to be made a member of the Royal Scottish Academy. Her work was held in high regard in Europe and America and she was friendly with John Ruskin and other eminent thinkers of the day.
