Cask pump

This hand cask pump was used to transfer raw whisky to casks for ageing. It was on display at Glenkinchie Distillery in East Lothian before being given to the Museum. It dates from the first half of the 20th century.

Whisky, the name of Scotland's national drink, is derived from Gaelic, uisge beatha or water of life. Distilled from fermented grain-mash, it was being made throughout Scotland by the 15th century. In the 19th century many large distilleries were built and the process became industrial. Whisky is Scotland's most valuable export and an important source of tax revenue.
