Trade token (obverse), Halfpenny, of E Campbell, Edinburgh
Add to album

This is the obverse of a copper halfpenny trade token of E Campbell of Edinburgh. Dated 1796, this token is a 'mule' - struck from two dies not usually used together.

The obverse depicts a kilted Highlander. The surrounding text reads 'THE GALLANT GARB OF SCOTLAND'.

Tobacco reached Scotland from America in the early 17th century and smoking soon became popular. Tobacco was smoked in clay pipes, which were cheap and disposable. It was not until the mid 18th century that snuff-taking became more popular than smoking.
