This engraving entitled, 'Burns in Edinburgh 1787' shows Robert Burns reading his poem, 'Winter Night' to a literary gathering at the home of the Duchess of Gordon. The engraving was published in 1888 by Aitken Dott & Son of Castle Street, Edinburgh.

The engraver, Goupil, took his inspiration from an earlier painting by C M Hardie.

Robert Burns published his first collection of poems in the summer of 1786 and travelled to Edinburgh shortly afterwards where he was enthusiastically welcomed by leading literary figures.
