This silver gilt candelabrum was presented to Robert Napier in 1844 by the Officers of the Royal Navy in recognition of his assistance to their studies in the construction and management of steam vessels.

Regarded as father of the Clyde shipbuilding and marine engineering industries, Robert Napier was born in Dumbarton in 1791. Among his achievements were the engines for the first four Cunard liners and a series of liners and naval vessels.
