Demonstration apparatus, known as 'Philosophical Fireworks'

This demonstration apparatus, known as 'Philosophical Fireworks' was used to give spectacular demonstrations of burning gases. The apparatus was made in London around 1730 by W. & S. Jones.

The apparatus consists of an elaborate set of brass multiple gas jet burners in a fitted mahogany box.

A larger version of the apparatus is known to have been shown in Edinburgh's Theatre Royal in 1791.
