This is the obverse of a silver medal of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, a society founded in 1783 to further the study of science. The medal was awarded to William Putney Alison in 1817.

The obverse is inscribed, 'Royal Society of Edinburgh'.

William Putney Alison was the eldest son of Archibald, an Episcopal minister and author in Edinburgh. William went on to become a professor of medicine in Edinburgh and a pioneer in public health.
