Back of a silver case for playing cards

This is the front of a silver playing cards' case, presented to Mrs Helen Dewar by the members of the Sunday School at Howrah Presbyterian Church near Calcutta in India. The case, dated 1906, was made in China.

Silver card case: Chinese, Hong Kong, 1906

By the mid 18th century Scots were influential in the East India Company, originally chartered in 1601 to pursue oriental trade. In the 19th century Scots rose to prominence in a range of professions in India including medicine, engineering and education.
