Linen sheeting

The sample of lightweight linen sheeting dates from the 19th century. The sheet is marked with the owner's name, 'Mattew Hyndman' and the measurement '21 yeards'.

Linen sample of light weight sheeting showing the owners name 'Mattew Hyndman' and '21 yeards' to identify it at Bleechfield: British, 19th century

With mechanization in the 19th century, linen manufacture became a factory industry, although some processes remained hand-based. Bleaching, initially with sour milk and fern ashes, was essential to improve the finish of the cloth.
