Add to album

A sampler is a piece of embroidery executed as an example of the embroiderers' skill in using a variety of stitches. This example was made by Jean Stevenson of Kirkintilloch in 1814.

The linen sampler is embroidered in coloured silks and has many typical features of Scottish samplers including birds on a fountain, thistle, peacocks and other small motifs; the border pattern; and the elaborate alphabet.

Jean Stevenson was born in August 1797 and so was 16 or 17 years old when she made this sampler.
