Cup known as the 'Neill Cup'

This cup was presented to Dr Patrick Neill in 1843 by '600 practical gardeners, natives of Scotland' in recognition of his lifelong services to horticulture. It was designed by James McNab and made by James Mackay, an Edinburgh silversmith, in 1843.

The three-sided cup is on a pedestal. It has three statuettes and, surmounting the cover, the seated figure of Britannia. The engravings on the cup include tools and glasshouses - references to Neill's interest in horticulture.

Head of the printing firm of Neill and Co, Neill was better-known as a scientist. He had a keen interest in botany and horticulture and was a founding member and the first secretary of the Caledonian Horticultural Society.
