Seal box (1st side), associated with John Graham, Earl of Montrose
Add to album

This box was made to hold a wax impression of the Great Seal of Scotland. The impression was used on a royal letter appointing John Graham, 3rd Earl of Montrose, to the post of King's Commissioner in Scotland.

The box is engraved on this side with the Royal Arms as used in England.

John Graham became King's Commissioner for Scotland after James VI departed for London in 1603. The post made him James' representative in parliament and in the General Assembly of Scotland, and gave him almost vice-regal powers.
