Tally stick

A tally stick was a stick marked with notches, used to represent the amount of a debt. This example was used in the groundnut (peanut) trade in the Gambia in West Africa.

Tally-stick used in the ground nut trade: West Africa, Gambia

One of the first Scots to explore the Gambia was Mungo Park, a graduate of Edinburgh University. He sailed up the Gambia and Niger rivers in 1795, gaining access to the African interior.
