Box, presented to Captain David Ramsay, Royal Navy
Add to album

This silver box was presented in 1813 to Captain David Ramsay of the Royal Navy by Trinity House - the organisation which controlled the port of Leith. Although probably made by Richard Haxton of Edinburgh, the box is overmarked by John Hay of Leith.

The inscription on the lid reads, 'Presented by the Trinity House of Leith to Captain David Ramsay Royal Navy 1813'.

Ramsay oversaw the defence of the port of Leith and was responsible for organising the local `press gang' which forcibly recruited men for the Navy.
