This carved oak chair is from Falkland Palace in Fife. It dates from the late 17th century.

The chair has spiral uprights with early rococo decorative twirls. The ornamentation includes a crown motif - introduced to celebrate the Restoration - and an 'S' embellishment, known as the Flemish scroll.

Falkland Palace was begun by James IV in 1500 and completed by his son James V in 1541. The palace has been called 'the first essay in full Renaissance architecture in Britain'.
