Banknote, One guinea, issued by Dumfries Commercial Bank

This one guinea banknote was issued by the Dumfries Commercial Bank on 2 April 1804. The note was printed using copper plates engraved by Kirkwood & Sons of Edinburgh.

The note, numbered A2/438, is made payable to John Stott and signed by the manager, James Graill and the junior cashier, James Gracie.

The Dumfries Commercial Bank was a short-lived venture which began in 1804. It was established by James Gracie 'with the assistance of his son and another partner' and issued one guinea (£1.05) and £5 notes. Unfortunately the Bank failed in 1808.
