Five-pound banknote

This British Linen Company five pound banknote is dated 1 August 1780. The British Linen Company was founded by charter in 1746, but quickly moved into banking.

The banknote was signed by William Henderson, Manager and D. Hogarth, Accountant. It is printed on one side only.

By the end of the 1770s the British Linen Company had withdrawn from manufacturing and trading in linen. By the end of the 18th century it was as important as the other two Chartered Banks - the Bank of Scotland and Royal Bank of Scotland.
