Back-plate
Add to album

This back-plate is part of a pikeman's armour. It comes from the armoury at Inveraray Castle in Argyll. The back-plate is made of iron and dates from the 17th century.

The back-plate has two large scalloped strap ends at the shoulder for attaching to a breast-plate.

Pikemen still wore armour like this in the civil wars of the mid-17th century. It was kept by the nobility for arming their retainers, and also by burgesses who had to take their turn at 'watching and warding'.
