From Inveraray Castle, Argyllshire

Breast-plate
Add to album

This pikeman's breast-plate is from the armoury at Inveraray Castle in Argyll. It is made of iron and dates from the 17th century.

The breast-plate has a broad skirt. There are two stud fasteners on the chest, and a hook at both sides, for attaching a back-plate.

Pikemen still wore armour like this in the civil wars of the mid 17th century. It was kept by the nobility for arming their retainers, and also by burgesses who had to take their turn at 'watching and warding'.
