Pistol, made in 1678

This pistol was made by Thomas Caddell (the First) in 1678.

The butt of the pistol has iron scrolls and is signed on the lock-plate 'Thomas Caddell 1678'. The pistol has a late snaphance lock and is extensively decorated with inlaid plaques and bands of silver and engraving.

A demand from Highlanders for pistols was met in the 17th and early 18th centuries by the town of Doune in Stirlingshire. The distinctive all-metal pistols are the output of families of gunsmiths, in particular the Caddells, who were formerly blacksmiths
