Silver presentation spoon

This silver presentation spoon, dated 1904-5 with Edinburgh hallmarks, was probably made by David McGregor & Co of Perth. It shows the popularity of Celtic Revival style decoration, which was particularly strong in the east of Scotland.

The back is inscribed, 'LKB FROM JB B-M MURIE 15th Oct. 1904'.

An 1784 act required every silversmith in Scotland to send his wares to Edinburgh for marking. Although not rigorously enforced, most silversmiths in Glasgow and some in Perth, Aberdeen and Dundee followed this rule.
