From Kelso Abbey, Borders

Jug
Add to album

This 12th-century jug was found during excavations at Kelso Abbey in the Borders in 1975-6.

Substanially intact, the jug is missing two thirds of the rim and spout. There is a light green glaze on the handle, shoulder and neck of the jug.

Kelso Abbey was established in 1128 by a group of monks who came to Scotland from Tiron in France. The monks were granted extensive land, which brought rent and taxes to the monastery.
