This is the obverse of a James VIII gold pattern guinea minted in 1828, probably in London, from dies manufactured in 1716. The coin was worth 21 shillings.

The obverse bears a portrait of James. The Latin inscription translates as 'James VIII, by the Grace of God'.

Dies were prepared for what was intended to be a Scottish gold and silver coinage for James VIII, had his rebellion of 1715 succeeded. No contemporary strikings are known, but a number of pattern coins were struck from the original dies in 1828.
