Coin (obverse), Denarius, of Cnaeus Plancius

This silver denarius was minted in Rome by Cnaeus Plancius in 55 BC. It was a special issue authorised by the Senate, as indicated by the legend 'S.C' (for 'senatus consulto'). This picture shows the obverse of the coin.

The obverse depicts a woman wearing a type of hat associated with Macedonia. The legend 'CN.PLANCIVS' in front of her refers to the moneyer, while 'AED.CVR.S.C' behind her refers to his position (curule aedile) and the nature of the issue.

Curule aediles were officials concerned with the administration of Rome. They had a number of judicial duties, and presided over public festivals. Many of these festivals were funded privately by them, and were used to gain support for future offices.
