Coin (obverse), Denarius, of Aulus Plautius

This silver denarius was minted in Rome by Aulus Plautius in 55 BC. It was a special issue authorised by the Senate, as indicated by the legend 'S.C' (for 'senatus consulto'). This picture shows the obverse of the coin.

The obverse depicts Cybele, the mother goddess of Phyria, whose cult spread to Rome. The legend 'A.PLAVTIVS' in front of her refers to the moneyer, and 'AED.CVR' behind to his position of curule aedile.

Curule aediles were officials concerned with the administration of Rome. They had a number of judicial duties, and presided over public festivals. Many of these festivals were funded privately by them, and were used to gain support for future offices.
